One of the most haunted places for trekkers is Sunderdhunga Glacier trek it is situated in Bageshwar district of Uttrakhand state. The valley of beautiful stones is meaning of Sunderdhunga. From Loharkhet Sunderdhunga trek is start. It passes cross the Dhakuri pass, which offers best challenge at the starting of the trek. An attractive glacier is Sunderdhunga Glacier situated in the alpine region. Sunderdhunga Glacier is surrounded by gigantic peaks such as Tharkot in the west.
During this trek, the snow capped peaks distinctly visible are Panwalidwar, Mrigthuni, Tharkhot and Maiktoli. The trek to Sunderdhunga goes cross Dudhia Dhaung, Jaitoli and Kathalia. For nature lovers and trekkers there are two glacier namely Sukhram, Maiktoli. You are surrounded by some of the pretty peaks in the region, here. The trek gives an amazing view of waterfalls, Himalayan ranges and the trekkers require to across deep forests.
From Maiktoli glacier and Sukhram cave, Khati to Sunderdhunga view point is 24 km distance covered by a night halt at Kathalia. In opposite directions Maiktoli glacier and Sukhram cave are both 7 km from Kathalia. In Kumaon region one of the most visit trekking places is Sunderdhunga as the trek offers a variety of natural magnificence. It is 24 km approx beyond the Khati village and it considered as a difficult trek in compare to Kafni and Pindari Glaciers.
Sunderdhunga or the 'valley of beautiful stones' is also located in the Pindar region. The glacier offers a tough trek as compared to Pindari and Kaphini. There are two glacier for trekkers and nature lovers, namely Maiktoli and Sukhram. The route upto village Khati is common for both Pindari and Sunderdhunga glacier.
Sunderdhunga Glacier Trek: The trek length is 54 kms from Base Camp - Song.
Song to Loharkhet - 3kms Loharkhet to Dhakuri - 11 kms
Dhakuri to Kathi - 8 kms
Kathi to Sundarrfhunga Glacier - 30 kms.
Day 01: Kathgodam – Bageshwar – Loharkhet
Drive to Bageshwar after breakfast from Kathgodam. At the confluence of Gomti and Saryu River visit the old Bagnath temple and explore the town of Bageshwar. Head towards Loharkhet after lunch and reach by evening. Stay overnight in rest house.
Day 02: Loharkhet – Dhakuri
Your first step trek is start to Kafni and Pindari Glacier. Today, trek is 11 km that takes you down into the depth of the valley. Above sea level, it is situated at an elevation of 1,760 m. From Dhakuri Khal, after following the trail for few more kilometers then you reach Dhakuri. From Dhakuri Khal snow capped peaks view of southern wall of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary is visible. Stay overnight in tents.
Day 03: Dhakuri – Khati – Jaitoli
The biggest village is Khati that you will pass through on the Pindari Glacier trek. The trail crosses the thick forest of Rhododendrons. En route Kafni and Pindari Glacier, last village is Khati, above sea level it is situated at an elevation of 2,210 m. Stay overnight in camps.
Day 04: Jaitoli – Dhungia Dhaun – Kathalia
Today, you have to cover the distance is 13 km crossing thick alpine forest for more than half of journey. From Jaitoli, Dhungia Dhun is situated 8 km. Today, you will also see the river of Saria. Porter from the starting of the trek it is essential to take a guide even for professional and experienced trekkers beyond Dhungia Dhaun. En route Sunderdhunga Glacier last inhabited village is Kathalia. Stay overnight in camp.
Day 05: Kathalia – Maiktoli Top / Sukhram Cave – Kathalia
The trek to Sukhram Cave and Maiktoli Top from Kathalia. You feel that you will touch the peak from here. From Kathalia both these destinations are situated 7 km. Above sea level, Maiktoli Top is situated at 4,320 m. From here you can view Sunderdunga view point and a pretty place is Sukhram Cave to watch out for. Then return to Kathalia but the trek to Maiktoli from Sukhram Cave is arduous. Stay overnight in camps.
Day 06: Kathalia – Jaitoli
From Kathalia the trek descends to Jaitoli. Enjoy the every moments of beautiful picturesque magnificence of Sunderdhunga Valley. Stay overnight in tents.
Day 07: Jaitoli – Khati – Dhakuri
From Jaitoli trek to Khati is quite easy but from Khati the trek goes moderate to Dhakuri. Return to Dhakuri in the morning. Stay overnight in tents.
Day 08: Dhakuri – Loharkhet – Kathgodam
The downward all the route to Loharkhet after breakfast. This is the last day of Sunderdhunga trekking tour. Your trip is end here with great memories.
Itinerary Starts from Kathgodam
Day 1: Arrival at Kathgodam Railway station at 5 am, leave for Gwaldam. Night Halt in Gwaldam.
Day 2: Gwaldham -Song- Dhakuri (2621m) 82kms/3hr , 13km trek/6hr Drive to Song, 13 Kms trek to Dhakuri (2680 m). Dinner & overnight stay in camps.
Day 3: Dhakuri - Khati- Jatoli 15kms/8hr From Dhakuri one has to go to village Jatoli, which is 7 Kms away from Khati. From Khati follow pinder river upto Warbham - the meeting place of Pinder River and Sunderdhunga stream. Now along Sunderdhunga stream, reach Jaitoli crossing boulders ascent for night halt. Dinner & overnight stay in camps.
Day 4: Jatoli- Dhungiya Dhaun 8kms/5hr From Jatoli (2000 m) upto Dhungiya Dhaun(2700 m), about 8 Kms is a tough trek. Follow along Sunderdhunga stream upto Dhingiyadhung for night halt. Dinner & overnight stay in camps.
Itinerary Starts from Delhi
Day 1: Departure from Delhi to Kathgodam - Arrival at Kathgodam at 5 am.
Day 2: Kathgodam - Gwaldam 244kms/9hr Gwaldam with its salubrious climate is a little heaven nestling in the woods. There are several orchards generally of apple. One can watch the Trishul peaks coming even closer. Check in TRH/Hotel.
Day 3: Gwaldham -Song- Dhakuri (2621m) 82kms/3hr 13km trek/6hr Drive to Song, 13 Kms trek to Dhakuri (2680 m). Dinner & overnight stay in camps.
