Nanda Devi is the second highest peak in Indian Himalayan. In the entire Himalayan chain, Nanda Devi is must surely one of the legendary region. Nanda Devi is surrounded by a ridge wall and it is the highest mountain situated completely within India. Rishi Ganga is the only break in this wall. Nanda Devi and Nanda Devi East attest the beauty of twin peaks. First climbed in the year 1939 was Nanda Devi east massif and French group tried an attempt but two members lost later 1951. One of the most difficult summits is Nanda Devi East Massif.
From Nanda Devi the river of Rishi Ganga originates here and then flows down to create a deep valley. Nanda Devi is a blessed mountain for Hindu devotees, one of the nicknames of the Goddess of Death is Nanda, the Shiva’s wife. In the Indian Himalayan region being one of the most difficult treks the journey requires several acclimatization bases. From Lilam to Nanda Devi East base camp is the actual trek which is 17-18 kilometers approx from Munsiyari. The trail heads to Bugdiar at 2,700mts of an altitude passing through a few Shepherd villages and a thick forest of Bamboo from Lilam.
The trek uphill goes cutting through alpine meadows dotted and several gorges with Bhojpatra trees to Martoli at 3,430 meters from Bugdiar the trek goes through the pretty valley of Gori Ganga. The trail downhill follows the same route to Munsiyari from the base camp. The higher altitude and several cultures that are indigenous only to the Trans Himalayan range the trek also provide glimpses of life.
