This Glacier is one of the major attractions of herb experts and botanists in Chamoli district of Dev Bhoomi Uttrakhand. The world’s highest peak is Everest in Nepal and bearing the same name there is no village around it. Along with the fascinating Himalayan peaks adding to the beauty of Uttrakhand such as Trishul, Nanda Devi, mesmerizing rivers, enchanting streams and Nanda Kot, hundreds of glaciers, sacred pilgrimage, varied wildlife fauna and flora, entertains thousands of trekking enthusiasts every year and this glacier holds significance to Dhauli Ganga system of glaciers. Dronagiri are also known as Doonagiri.
According to the Ramayana’s epic story Lakshman being wounded by a powerful salvo (Shakti Vaan) from Maghnath. Sushain Vaidya advised that Sanjivni Booti (life saving herb) is the only way to cure the wound of saved the Lakshman’s life. Vaidya had told Sanjvini Booti was found only in Dronagiri hill that’s why Hanuman went to fetch the life saving herb from Dronagiri hill. Then Hanuman lifted the herb and flew return to Lanka and Vadiya saved Lakshman’s life. Some of the important glaciers of Dhauli Ganga systems are Niti glacier, Changbang glacier and Girthi Hoti glacier.
Above the sea level, this glacier is situated at a height of 2,400 meters. From the village the Dronagiri peak could not be seen. En route the Dronagiri Glacier, Bagini Glacier is also falls. One of the major Hill Station is Dronagiri in Uttrakhand state. From Jumma about 8 km trek is starts to Dronagiri village. From Dronagiri village trek to Dronagiri Glacier is about 12 km. Trekkers get enchanted to see the Himalayan flowers and herbs in the entire trek. Between mid May to mid October is the best time to visit here. Avoid in the middle of July - August to escape rain.
By Road: From Haridwar, Dehradun or Rishikesh you can go to Joshimath which is well connect by roads to other places of Uttrakhand. To Jumma village you will require a cab or jeep and you will be trekking to Dronagiri village is 8 km from there after 12 km trek you will reach Dronagiri glacier.
By Train: Rishikesh is the nearest railway station from Joshimath is about 251 km.
By Air: Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport at Dehradun is 267 km.
