From where Bhagirathi emerges the well known Glacier in Gharwal Himalayas is Gaumukh Glacier at an elevation of 3200 mt. One of the sacred Char Dham of Uttarakhand and the second largest glacier of India is Gaumukh with length of 30kms and width of 4kms. The Himalayan peaks are Meru, Bhagirathi Sisters, Shivling, Kharchkund, Sudarshan and more are visible during the trek.A source of holy river Ganga, Gaumukh is also known as Cows snout, who come here to witness the birth of Mother Ganga. From Gangotri you will start your journey. The leading peaks like Kedardome Peak, Mt. Shivling Peak and Gangotri group of peaks you will also witness the pretty views of these.
Gangotri is a famous Hindu Pilgrimage site as well as trekking destination, along with Gangotri. To take back there is something new, every time you visit here. The legendary source of the Ganges River, Gangotri Gaumukh trek you will take to Gaumukh located on the snout of the Gangotri Glacier. Here Bhagirathi river is beautiful speedy. In just 70 years the snout has moved 1km, according to modern research. Lord Shiva received the river Ganga into his matted locks. The largest Himalayan Glacier is enveloped Gangotri being Shivling, Meru, Thalay Sagar Peaks and Bhagirathi 3.
Day 01: Dehradun to Gangotri
From Dehradun it is located 35kms, the popular hill station is the first major attraction will be Mussoorie. A major town of Uttarakhand is Uttarkashi. From Dehradun and Rishikesh to Uttarkashi buses are easily available. You will arrive to the land of Gods see all the Temples and Religious people around. You take the river Bhagirathi to the scenic Harshil Village. The source of mighty Ganges, a day trek takes one to Gaumukh. The good place to enjoy the serene evening amidst mountains is Harshil. Stay overnight in guest house.
Day 02: Gangotri – Chirbasa – Bhojbasa
The sacred shrine of Goddess Ganga after morning breakfast. Today, the entire trek is along the roaring Bhagirathi River. During the trek, Bhagirathi peaks are constantly visible. Above sea level Chirbasa is situated at an altitude of 3,580m. From Gangotri continue trekking to reach Chirbasa is located 9km. On the mountain peaks the stunning awesome views of sun rays is visible. We trek furher to Bhojbasa the entire trail passes through dense forest from Chirbasa. Stay overnight in tents.
Day 03: Bhojbasa – Gaumukh – Tapovan
The panoramic view of Bhagirathi group of peaks. Trek to Gaumukh (3890mts) the source of the Ganges, after breakfast. It probably appeared like a cow’s mouth that’s why the sages called it ‘Gaumukh’. This place is popular for the Shadus who come here for meditation. From Bhojbasa is required for accessing sound route crossing Bhagirathi River. During the long summer month it is also the little wonder where Sadhus and Saints extended meditation.
Day 04: Tapovan – Nandanvan
From Tapovan to reach Nandanvan required crossing the massive Gaumukh Glacier. It is situated at the foot of Bhagirathi peaks. Stay overnight in tents.
Day 05: Nandanvan – Bhojbasa
Enjoy the sunrise on high peaks in early morning. The origin of Holy Ganges is this. Stay overnight at camp.
Day 06: Bhojbasa – Chirbass – Gangotri
From Bhojbasa to reach Gangotri it will take around 5-6 hours. Stay overnight at camp.
Day 07: Dehradun
You ride back to Dehradun. Between mountains, Bhagirathi River and Valleys this will 8 hours ride. Your trek is end here.
HOW TO REACH
By Bus: From ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun buses are easily available.
By Air: The nearest airport to Gangotri Temple is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun which is located 257km. This is well connected with most of the Airport.
BY Train: From Gangotri Glacier the nearest railway station is in Rishikesh. Cabs and buses are available.
