Yamunotri Temple, the source of the Yamuna River and the seat of the Goddess Yamuna, is one of the four sites in India's Chota Char Dham pilgrimage. The actual source of Yamuna River lies in the Yamunotri Glacier at a height 6,387 mtrs., near Bandarpunch peaks in Lower Himalayas, in the Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. The Yamunotri Temple is located in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, India, a full day's journey from Uttarakhand's main towns — Rishikesh, Haridwar or Dehradun. The actual temple is only accessible by a thirteen kilometre trek from the town of Hanuman Chatti and a six kilometer walk from Janki Chatti; horses or palanquins are available for rent. The hike from Hanuman Chatti to Yamunotri Yatra is very picturesque with beautiful views of a number of waterfalls.

The first stopover for the Char Dham Yatra (Four Religious Places Journey) of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri Tour 2024 is the westernmost shrine of Yamunotri in the Garhwal Himalayas in the state of Uttaranchal. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, it is perched atop a flank of the Bandar Poonchh (Monkey's Tail) peak (3165 mts. above sea level). The shrine attracts devotees in large numbers from May to October
The Yamunotri Temple falls on the left bank of River Yamuna. The present temple was built by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the late nineteenth century. Once destroyed by an earthquake, it has been rebuilt. Near the temple are three hot springs, a bath in them is very refreshing after a tedious 13 kms. trek from Hanumanchatti or 5 kms. from Janki Chatti.
The temple remains closed from November to April. The shrine of Yamunotri Yatra is one of the "four dhams" of Uttarakhand. Yamunotri Temple is the source of the revered river Yamuna which originates from the Champasar Glacier lying 1 km ahead of the shrine, at an altitude of 4421 mts. The approach is extremely difficult and pilgrims therefore offer puja at the temple itself. Yamunotri finds a special mention in the Hindu mythology. According to a legend, this secluded hilly spot was the home of an ancient sage, Asit Muni.

The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya and closes on the second day after Diwali festival. The temple holds immense importance amongst the Hindus. Janki Chatti: It is the midpoint of the trek to Yamunotri which is accessible by jeeps. Janki Chatti is situated 7kms before Yamunotri and this place is popular for thermal springs.
Surya Kund: There are many natural thermal springs in Yamunotri of which Surya Kund is renowned. The water of Surya Kund has a surprising temperature of 1900F. Pilgrims tie potatoes and rice to cook it by immersing it under water of Surya Kund. After cooking it is served as 'prasad'.
Divya Shilla: Divya Shilla is a rock pillar which is worshipped before entering the divine Yamunotri temple.
Hanuman Chatti: It is the commencement point of the trek to two popular destinations Yamunotri and Dodi Tal. Yamunotri is situated 13km from Hanuman Chatti which has to be covered by foot or on ponies. Jeeps are also available upto Janki Chatti which is 6km from Hanuman Chatti. Hanuman Chatti is the confluence of Hanuman Ganga and Yamuna River. You can purchase food items and raincoats from Hanuman Chatti.
Barkot: Barkot is situated at an elevation of 1,220mts above sea level in Uttarkashi district. Barkot is one of the important destinations of Uttarkashi district with good accommodation facilities available. Barkot has an ancient temple and it is situated 49km from Yamunotri.
Dodi Tal: According to mythology Lord Ganesha was born in this place. This mysterious lake is situated at an elevation of 3,307mts above sea level surrounded by dense forests of deodar, oak and rhododendrons. The pristine water of this lake is the home of endangered Himalayan Golden Trouts and many other fishes. The depth of this lake is still unknown. A visitor encounters splendor of nature en route Dodi Tal.
Uttarkashi: It is perched at an elevation of 1,352mts above sea level at a distance of 78kms from Hanuman Chatti. Uttarkashi is a picturesque spot well connected by motorable roads with major destinations of Uttarakhand state. It is situated on the banks of the holy Bhagirathi River. Uttarkashi houses one of the reputed mountaineering institutes of India i.e. Nehru Institute of Mountaineering.
By Air: Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest Airport to Yamunotri situated at a distance of 210kms. It is well connected to Delhi with daily flights. Hanuman Chatti is directly not connected by motorable roads with Jolly Grant Airport but taxis are available from Jolly Grant Airport to Hanuman Chatti. Helicopter services are also available till Yamunotri from Dehradun.
By Rail: The nearest railway stations to Yamunotri are Rishikesh and Dehradun. Dehradun railway station is situated 175kms from Yamunotri and Rishikesh railway station is situated 200kms before Yamunotri on NH58. Rishikesh and Dehradun are well connected by railway networks with major destinations of India. Trains to Rishikesh are frequent. Hanuman Chatti is well connected by motorable roads with Rishikesh and Dehradun. Taxis and buses are available from Rishikesh, Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi and Barkot and many other destinations to Hanuman Chatti.
By Road: Yamunotri is directly not connected with motorable roads and the trek commences from Hanuman Chatti. Hanuman Chatti is well connected by motorable roads with major destinations of Uttarakhand state. Buses to Rishikesh are available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate. Buses and Taxis to Hanuman Chatti are easily available from major destinations of Uttarakhand state like Rishikesh, Dehradun, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Barkot etc.
